What it is
Akshaya means imperishable. Akshaya Tritiya falls on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya and is considered auspicious for beginnings, charity and prayer, even without consulting a separate muhurat.
Traditional significance
Generosity offered today is traditionally said to bring lasting merit. Many families buy gold as a symbol of prosperity, but the heart of the day is giving.
History and culture
Traditions associate the day with Parashurama Jayanti, the descent of the Ganga and the start of the Treta Yuga.
