What it is
All Souls’ Day, 2 November, follows All Saints’ Day on 1 November. In Mexico and across Latin America, Día de los Muertos is celebrated over the same two days.
Traditional significance
Families visit graves, light candles and pray for loved ones who have passed. For Día de los Muertos, homes build ofrendas (altars) with photos, marigolds and favourite foods, welcoming the dead back in joyful remembrance.
History and culture
All Souls’ Day has been kept in the Western Church since around the 10th century, when Abbot Odilo of Cluny set 2 November for remembering the departed. Día de los Muertos blends Indigenous Mexican traditions with these Catholic feasts.
