What it is

Chaitra (Vasanta) Navratri begins on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada and lasts nine nights, each devoted to a form of Goddess Durga.

Traditional significance

Many people fast, light a lamp, read the Devi Mahatmya or sing devotional songs, and on Ashtami or Navami honour young girls as forms of the Goddess (Kanya Puja).

History and culture

The ninth day is Ram Navami, the birth of Lord Rama.

A suggested practice

Nine days, nine qualities · about 5 minutes

  1. Choose one quality to grow over the next nine days: courage, patience, kindness, focus…
  2. Each evening, light a lamp or candle (safely).
  3. Note one moment from the day when you practised that quality.

Affirmation

I honour the strength and gentleness within me.

Reflection question

Which inner quality do I most want to nourish?
