What it is
Vijayadashami falls on Ashwin Shukla Dashami, the day after Navratri, with the main observance in the afternoon (Aparahna).
Traditional significance
It celebrates Rama’s victory over Ravana and Durga’s victory over Mahishasura. It is considered one of the most auspicious days to begin something new.
History and culture
Effigies of Ravana are burned in North India. In Kerala, children begin their education with Vidyarambham. In Maharashtra, apta (shami) leaves are exchanged as “gold”, with the wish “sone ghya, sonyasarkhe raha” (take gold and stay like gold).
