What it is
Guru Purnima falls on Ashadha Purnima. Students, disciples and families honour their teachers and spiritual guides.
Traditional significance
Guru means “one who removes darkness”. The day is for gratitude towards everyone who has taught us, including life itself.
History and culture
It is also Vyasa Purnima, honouring Sage Veda Vyasa, traditionally credited with compiling the Vedas and composing the Mahabharata. Buddhists remember the Buddha’s first sermon at Sarnath.
