See it for your city

What it is

Litha is celebrated at the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in its hemisphere.

Traditional significance

Midsummer fires, flower crowns and gatherings honour the Sun at its strongest. It is also a reminder that from here the light begins to turn.

History and culture

Midsummer has been marked for thousands of years: crowds still gather at Stonehenge to watch the sunrise, and Scandinavia celebrates Midsommar. The name Litha comes from Bede’s Anglo-Saxon month names.

A suggested practice

Soak in the light · about 5 minutes

  1. Spend a few minutes outdoors in the daylight.
  2. Feel the warmth on your skin, breathing slowly.
  3. Name what is flourishing in your life right now.

Affirmation

I let my light shine fully.

Reflection question

What is in full bloom in my life?

The Wheel of the Year as celebrated today is a modern Pagan calendar, gathered in the mid-20th century from older Celtic and Germanic seasonal festivals. South of the equator, most people turn the wheel by six months to follow their own seasons, and this calendar does the same for southern cities.
