What it is
Maha Shivaratri falls on the Chaturdashi of the waning Moon in Magha (Phalguna in the northern Purnimanta calendar). It is observed at night, with the most important worship at midnight (Nishita).
Traditional significance
Devotees keep a vigil (jagaran), chant “Om Namah Shivaya”, offer water, milk and bilva leaves to the Shiva linga, and many fast. It is a night for turning inwards, beyond the restlessness of the mind.
History and culture
Traditions associate the night with Shiva’s cosmic dance, with his marriage to Parvati, and with the appearance of the endless pillar of light (the Jyotirlinga).
A suggested practice
A minute of stillness, repeated · about 10 minutes
- Sit comfortably in a quiet place.
- For one minute, simply watch the breath without changing it.
- Rest for a moment, then repeat; ten rounds in all.
- If you wish, silently repeat “Om Namah Shivaya” with each breath.
Affirmation
In stillness, I meet what is unchanging in me.
Reflection question
What would I like to let go of, so something new can awaken?
