What it is

Yule is celebrated at the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year in its hemisphere. From here the days begin to lengthen.

Traditional significance

Evergreens, candles and the Yule log symbolise life and light that endure through winter. It is a time to rest, gather loved ones and welcome the returning Sun.

History and culture

Yule was a midwinter festival of the Germanic peoples. Many Christmas customs, such as the Yule log, evergreen trees and holly, come from these older winter traditions.

A suggested practice

Welcome the light · about 5 minutes

  1. Sit in a darkened room for a minute and let yourself rest.
  2. Light a candle (safely) and watch the light return.
  3. Name one hope you carry into the new year.

Affirmation

Even in the longest night, the light returns.

Reflection question

What has the darkness taught me this year?

The Wheel of the Year as celebrated today is a modern Pagan calendar, gathered in the mid-20th century from older Celtic and Germanic seasonal festivals. South of the equator, most people turn the wheel by six months to follow their own seasons, and this calendar does the same for southern cities.
